Summer 2019 Issue of DIAKONIA Available Online

The Summer 2019 issue of DIAKONIA, the newsletter of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America, is now available online. This issue features the Diocese of Worcester and New England, and includes a message from His Grace Bishop John. Sayidna says, "The project for this year is the Antiochian Village. The Antiochian Women have been asked to help add to the buildings of this, our learning and spiritual center, new buildings and a cathedral to meet the growing needs of the Archdiocese. I am pleased with this project and believe the women of the Archdiocese are up for this task.

"I have been blessed by the Antiochian Village for the last 40 years. The Village has given me opportunities to learn, share, make friends, and encounter God. The Village has been for me the primary place of beauty, solitude, prayer and learning. At our Village I have met fellow God-fearing people from all over the Antiochian Church in America and abroad, Orthodox of other jurisdictions and Christians from many backgrounds. Each encounter has enriched my life and taught me about God, myself, and others."

Diocesan Spiritual Advisor Fr. Edward Hughes writes, "You [Antiochian Women], being so very busy in this very busy day and age, take time away from your families in order to minister to Jesus in His Church. You spend yourselves freely and unselfishly, working and 'striving' (as the Antiochian Women’s prayer puts it). May God strengthen you as you serve Him with your whole being."

2019 Act of Mercy is "Education Support for School Children"

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it…”
  Proverbs 22:6

Your Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, Esteemed Hierarchs, Reverend Clergy, & Sisters in Christ,

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

I hope everyone had a blessed Nativity and Epiphany!

As a recap, the NAB’s 2017-2018 Act of Mercy was a continuation of the FOCUS on Love campaign, which helps fund the Feeding Hungry Children program. In total, we raised $8,224.10 for this wonderful cause. With our help, approximately 9,939 hungry children across the country were provided fresh, nutritious meals! I would like to thank everyone for your contributions and support towards the “Act of Mercy,” “FOCUS ON LOVE.

For the 2018-2019 year, we will continue working with FOCUS. The Act of Mercy will expand to another area that is more encompassing of children’s needs. This year, our efforts will go towards FOCUS’s “Education Support for School Children.” Children are the building blocks of our future and it is important to help them along the way. Providing an education and resources for a child to receive a fruitful education will forever have an impact on them. This Act of Mercy will help provide educational access, food, books, supplies, tutoring and more to disadvantaged children in the United States. Attached to my email is also a brochure that provides additional information on this Act of Mercy.

2019 Project: Building a New Cathedral

"What is more precious to all of us than the Antiochian Village?"

His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH asked the members of the NAB and Spiritual Advisors this question as he prepared to tell us the theme of our 2019 NAB PROJECT.

The question immediately brought to mind what His Eminence Metropolitan PHILIP, of Thrice-Blessed Memory, used to say about the Antiochian Village:

"The Antiochian Village is the HEART of our Archdiocese."

When Metropolitan JOSEPH told us of his inspiration to build a new and beautiful cathedral on the grounds of the Village, we all immediately understood why this is such a wonderful vision. Not only does the building of a new cathedral give form to Metropolitan PHILIP's metaphor of a beating heart in the center of our Archdiocese, but a new and inspiring cathedral will also satisfy several practical and pressing needs. This vision of Metropolitan JOSEPH is one that I'm sure the Antiochian Women will be eager to help bring into reality.

March is Antiochian Women Month

The month of March is designated as Antiochian Women Month by His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH as a time when the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America encourage their sisters in Christ to participate in the Liturgy and minister in their parishes and their communities. Vice President/Project Coordinator Kh. Suzanne Murphy writes:

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
Beloved Hierarchs, Reverend Clergy, and Sisters in Christ:
March is Antiochian Women Month!

We most humbly ask all of you, the Pastors of our many beautiful parishes, to help us in our desire to be active and effective witnesses of the Resurrection and bearers of the Gospel message, like the Myrrhbearing Women, whom Metropolitan JOSEPH said we represent in our parishes.

Spring 2019 Issue of DIAKONIA Available Online

The Spring 2019 issue of DIAKONIA, the newsletter of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America, is now available online. This issue features the Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America, and includes a message from His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph. Sayidna writes, "Every year, the Metropolitan gives the Antiochian Women a project for a charitable and worthy cause. Over the decades, we have helped those within and those without the Archdiocese, both here and overseas. This year we have a special project that will touch the lives of both adults and children in our Archdiocese. That project is the building of a new Cathedral at the Antiochian Village.

In this issue, Bishop Basil also reflects: "The ministry of women within and to the Body of Christ, whether to Our Savior personally or to the least of His brethren, has been shown forth in so many lives of the saints—most especially of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Myrrh-bearing Women, and other female saints of the Church."

Also included are messages from Spiritual Advisor Fr. Christopher Morris, President Jaclyn Al-Hanna-Ferris, introductions to the diocesan board, and reports and photos from diocesan chapters. Read the issue here!

November 18, 2018

Your Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, Esteemed Hierarchs, Reverend Clergy & Sisters in Christ –

Christ is in our midst!

My initial President’s letter normally goes out in either August or September depending on the amount of information to be conveyed.  You may have thought I had “fallen off the face of the Earth” when I didn’t send out my usual missive, but I have been VERY active “behind the scenes” (which included negotiating a hotel contract for over three months, but more on that later!).  Rather than sending you numerous letters and/or emails alerting you as to what was happening, I thought I’d wrap everything up with a neat little bow and send it all at once!

So, in the words of Willy Wonka, “So much time and so little to do - wait a minute!  Strike that!  Reverse it,” here we go …

The last gathering of the North American Board was held at the Antiochian Village during the weekend of July 20 through 22.  We experienced beautiful weather, a nice turnout of women at our NAB meeting, and got a lot accomplished in a condensed period of time (due to the Archdiocesan Bible Bowl and Oratorical Competition being held that same weekend).  We were also gifted with a spiritual and uplifting message from His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, as well as learning about our newest NAB Project.

Nativity 2018 Issue of DIAKONIA Available Online

The Nativity issue of DIAKONIA, the newsletter of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America, is now available online. This issue features the Diocese of Ottawa, Eastern Canada and Upstate New York, and includes an Advent Message from His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph. His Eminence writes: "...let us spend these days tilling the soil of our hearts through fasting and repentance, watering our souls with works of mercy and reconciliation, and placing ourselves in the Light through prayer and attendance at divine services. By these, we shall partake of the Holy Mysteries unto life everlasting."

In this issue, Diocesan President Susanne Zeidan also reflects:

My grandparents and my parents were involved in our local church, and we grew up knowing it was our responsibility to continue their legacy. Through the Church, we have been blessed with many friends and a large Orthodox family."

The issue also contains introductions to the diocesan officers and coordinators, and is filled with numerous reports and photographs from the Diocese's parish chapters of Antiochian Women.

Summer 2018 Issue of DIAKONIA Available Online

The "Reflection of Summer 2018" issue of DIAKONIA, the newsletter of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America, is now available online. This issue highlights the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast, and includes a special message from Bishop NICHOLAS. His Grace writes:

As we start a new chapter in the life of the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast, we have been working diligently on many fronts to build all aspects of the diocese according to a new vision of rejuvenation and growth. The main theme is that we, the faithful, need to increase our knowledge noeticly and spiritually with regard to God in accordance with Jesus' prayer to His Father: "this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:3). As I have been emphasizing during my weekly pastoral visits to the DOMSE parishes, we need to "up our spiritual game" a notch or two on a continuous basis and while remaining humans work conscientiously on acquiring the attributes of God.

In this issue, Diocesan President Dawn Evancho also reflects:

As life goes, it has been a year of "ups and downs" for our Diocese. Last summer we celebrated our beloved Bishop ANTOUN's lifetime of service at the Archdiocese Convention in his hometown of Miami. A few months later, we laid him to rest at the Antiochian Village. We welcomed our new Bishop NICHOLAS and had our first Winter Retreat with him in Atlanta in January. We said a reluctant goodbye to our Spiritual Advisor, Fr. Stephen Rogers, as he started his retirement and welcomed him as our first Mid-Winter retreat speaker!

FOCUS on Love: Feeding Hungry Children

January 23, 2018

Dear Esteemed Hierarchs, Reverend Clergy, and Sisters in Christ,
Christ is in our midst!

I am writing to update you on the Antiochian Women's Common "Act of Mercy" for 2018.
Since last year's Act of Mercy was such a great success, we will continue our partnership with FOCUS North America once again. As a reminder, our Act of Mercy is entitled, "FOCUS ON LOVE, Feeding Hungry Children," which provides food for undernourished children in the United States. FOCUS has created a link as well as additional information to help with its efforts. There is a direct link for the Antiochian Women on the FOCUS website. There, you will find an informational video about where our efforts are going and the children we are helping.

I have also attached a pamphlet on how FOCUS serves impoverished children; a small, printable postcard about the Act of Mercy; and, lastly, a page with instructions on how to make a donation. Donations may be made online at the link provided above or via a check mailed directly to FOCUS. Local chapters are also encouraged to hold a fundraiser to promote our Act of Mercy. I would also ask each Diocesan Humanitarian Coordinator to compile a report of the contributions from each church in her respective Diocese, and forward it to me no later than June 30 so that we may present the final figures at our NAB Summer Meeting.

I would respectfully ask that you distribute this information to all of your local chapters as soon as possible.

Antiochian Women 2018 Project: "Strengthening the Ministries of our Church--VOCATIONS"

"Vocation" is defined as "a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation; a calling, mission, or purpose." At our 53rd Biennial Convention in Miami, His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH told us that "we are here for a purpose, and that purpose is to bring people together to praise God."

As we think of the definition of “vocation” in relation to the Church, we realize that it does not refer just to ordained or monastic vocations, but that there are many people who are doing holy work by dedicating their lives to ministries of various kinds. These ministries are inspired by the Holy Spirit and instituted by our Lord for the well-being of the Church and the salvation of souls. “And Christ, Himself, gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12).

Our Project this year will focus on these ministries and on supporting those who undertake them as a Godly VOCATION -- Our goal is to inspire and support vocations as well as to raise money to fund and encourage all of the excellent work that is being done throughout our Archdiocese by dedicated and self-sacrificing men and women.

Antiochian Women Update: August 2017 Letter From NAB President

August 26, 2017

Dear Sisters in Christ –

Christ is in our midst!

Two years ago as NAB President, I sent my initial correspondence on the Great Feast of the Dormition of Our Most Holy Theotokos.  Now, two years later, I am sending you this letter as we approach another wonderful day in her honor, the Placing of the Most Venerable Belt of the Theotokos (August 30), as well as the start of the Ecclesiastical New Year on September 1.  Thank you for allowing me to continue as NAB President over these next two years and continuing to serve in this magnificent ministry.

Our thanks to the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast and St. George Cathedral in Coral Gables, Florida for hosting the Archdiocese Convention that was held from July 25–30 at The Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida.  We had about 120 attendees at the Antiochian Women’s breakfast on Wednesday, July 26, which was followed by the NAB General Assembly.  That same evening, the re-elected NAB Officers and His Grace Bishop John as our NAB Spiritual Advisor were sworn into office by His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph.
