Order of St. Ignatius Encourages Giving to Camp Scholarships

Joanne Hakim, Administrator for The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch, reports: "At the recent board of directors meeting in New York, the amount of dollars that The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch contributed to camp scholarship was reported. A member of the board asked how many children were able to attend camp as a result of the Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch’s contribution. The answer to that question follows:

'The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch, as you know, contributes a significant portion (over 10%) of its annual revenue to our Camp Scholarship program. Beginning in 2009, we increased our commitment to $175,000 annually. Since inception the Order has contributed over $1,700,000 for scholarships to our camp children.'

However, what is most important is human lives impacted. For the 2010 camping season over 700 young people will receive scholarship assistance from The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch. We thank all of our Orthodox brothers and sisters who have joined The Order and ask everyone in our Self-Ruled Archdiocese to consider joining. One new member = one new camper = one soul saved!"

James Coles, Fr. Michael Ellis, Fr. Peter Paproski, Fr. Anthony Salzman, Dn. Paul Zaharas and Sbdn. John MahfouzTEMPE, AZ --- On February 4-5th, 2010, Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF), in partnership with a very generous grant from The Order of St. Ignatius, gathered a group of Board members and priests, from across five different SCOBA jurisdictions, to form the first-ever OCF Regional Chaplaincy Network.  In order to meet the pastoral needs of the 270 local OCF chapters throughout the United States and Canada, OCF has broken the country into nine different regions.  A Regional Chaplain and a Student Regional Representative will represent each of these regions.  Together these roles will assist with the development of new and existing OCF chapters.

“Identifying a group of talented and committed spiritual leaders to help build this network is a critical step in helping OCF create a spiritual safety net for our students as they leave home for college,” remarked Fr. James Coles, the OCF North American Chaplain.

Besides the organizational administration of this new network, the group discussed ideas and plans for Chaplain training and resources. Fr. Kevin Scherer, the OCF Executive Director said, “It’s our hope that this new network will not only help grow new OCF chapters, but resource those that are struggling to develop and stay connected to other Orthodox students across the country.”

Seminarian Thank You Letter to the Order

Antiochian seminarian Matthew Howell writes:

To His Eminence, Metropolitan PHILIP,

All the Right Reverend Bishops of our Archdiocese,

Mr. Daniel Abraham, the members of the governing council North American Officers, all the Diocesan officers, and all the members of the Order of St. Ignatius:

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

As we continue preparing ourselves for the incarnation of our Savior, and as we celebrate the joyous feast of St. Nicholas of Myra, we are reminded over and over again that Advent is not only a time of Christmas shopping, house decorating, or cookie baking. It is a time of giving and a time of thanksgiving. We give of our time, treasure, and talent in order to enliven our church and family lives, and we thoughtfully thank God for his many wonderful blessings in our lives.

December is St. Ignatius Month

God bless us all with health and happiness this season and always. This month throughout our Archdiocese parishes will be adorned in red as members of The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch don their membership crosses suspended by a red ribbon, a symbol of the blood which the Martyr Ignatius shed for Christ. The Cross and ribbon remind us that sacrificial giving is our obligation as an Antiochian Orthodox Christian.

In celebration of St. Ignatius Sunday, which falls this year on December 20, members of The Order in each parish will wear their crosses and pins, act as greeters, read the Epistle, take up the collection, help with the Communion line, give a homily, host the coffee hour for their parish that day. It is hoped that members will speak with those in their parish unfamiliar with The Order and explain the good works that are accomplished through membership.
